Cadets from all over B.C. were on parade July 26, marking this summer’s first of two graduation parades at the Regional Gliding School.
Twenty cadets graduated from the Advanced Aviation Course and 21 cadets graduated from the Basic Aviation Course. The parade included some special awards and presentations to six of the graduates.
Ron Rique, president of the Air Cadet League of Canada, was the reviewing officer for the parade. He congratulated the cadets on all their hard work these past three weeks and said that he was envious of the training they have the opportunity to participate in within the air cadet program.
After three weeks of training at the RGS, these young men and women will leave with a strong knowledge of aviation, a great sense of personal growth, fond memories, and new friendships. The cadets have spent a great deal of time learning about the principles of flight, air navigation, meteorology, airplane engines, aviation history and airmanship.
The following is a list of special award winners:
The Rob Wilson Memorial Award — Cpl. Ari Oceguera (525 Pathfinder Sqn in West Vancouver) and FCpl Gordon Emerslund (759 Falcon Sqn in Burnaby).
The BC Provincial Committee of the Air Cadet League of Canada Trophy — Cpl. Matthew Wiebe (521 Aurora Sqn in Mission) and Sgt. Travis De Rooy (893 Beaufort Sqn in Parksville).
The Strathcona Trust Award – Cpl Vanessa Wang (637 Arrow Sqn in Burnaby BC) and Sgt Lyra Hindrichs (848 Royal Roads Sqn in Victoria.)
This summer, the Regional Gliding School will have trained 36 cadets in the Private Power Pilot Scholarship Program, 45 cadets in the Gliding Scholarship Program, and another 84 cadets on the basic and advanced aviation courses.
