Former teacher, Alinda Ware, has been active in education at Shikunga Secondary School in Kakamega, Kenya for many years.

Following a presentation to the Rotary Club of Strathcona Sunrise in November 2001 by Alinda and John Bowbrick, the Rotary club decided to help fund secondary school fees for boys in Kenya. Girls’ fees were already covered by other groups. The initial arrangement was to support the project for four years to allow the first intake of students to finish secondary school. Funding from Strathcona Sunrise Rotary was supplemented by funds from the Rotary Foundation and the Rotary Club of Kakamega. Since then, Strathcona Sunrise Rotary has supported the project annually.

The students in this program are carefully selected by Ware based on their previous academic performance and likelihood of succeeding. She follows them along as they progress through the grades, offering encouragement and advice as needed. Alinda spends about half of each year in Kenya.

At the Oct. 3 meeting of the Rotary Club of Strathcona Sunrise, in recognition of her dedication to the education of students in Kakamega over many years, Alinda was made a Paul Harris Fellow Level 3 by member, Chip Ross. A Paul Harris Fellowship is the highest honour that Rotary can bestow on an individual. It is named after Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary International.
