Comox Valley ElderCollege (CVEC) has always taken pride in offering an extensive selection of courses in each of its fall and winter semesters.
Now in its 24th year, the lifelong learning organization is proud to roll out a roster of more than 60 engaging courses, nearly half of which are brand new this term.
When registration opens the week of Sept. 18, students aged 55 and better can enroll in subjects spanning the curriculum from arts and music to health and wellness, science and computers to history and social sciences, to language and literature. Among the new and notables are such tempting and diverse course titles as The Wild World of Ceremonies, Bankruptcy and Insolvency, Cosmology, Electricity Around the House, and Enneagram Personality Theory.
The vast majority of CVEC courses are held in-person at North Island College (NIC), with two being held off-campus and a half dozen delivered online. CVEC’s fall 2023 semester runs from Oct. 2 through Dec. 4, with courses varying in duration from one to eight weeks.
In addition to classroom-based courses, CVEC members can also sign up to attend the perennially popular Saturday morning Lecture Series, which kicks off on Oct. 14 in the Stan Hagen Theatre at NIC. The biannual series is renowned for presenting a diverse roster of speakers to address a central theme from the perspective of their fields of expertise. The Fall 2023 Lecture Series – Looking Forward: Our Changing World – brings in speakers practising in areas affected by change. Learn about challenges and changes in artificial intelligence, search and rescue, restorative justice, xeriscaping, environmental concerns, and elder care.
To help CVEC members (and those curious about learning for the sheer fun of it) decide among all those courses, CVEC hosts an Information Forum prior to the start of each semester. Proclaimed by many as the best method to choose which courses to indulge in, the forum hands over the stage to instructors to present short and snappy synopses of their course content. It’s the most effective and easiest way to get the scoop on school – all in one place, all in two hours.
The CVEC Information Forum will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. in the Stan Hagen Theatre. Admission is free and is open to all, but please note that course participation is limited to those 55+. Details and registration to attend either in-person or online can be found at forum.cvec.ca.
