The Comox Valley Farmers’ Market (CVFM) was excited to host the launch of local publisher Ann Kask’s fundraising cookbook RIPE - Local Fruit: Use It Fresh, Preserve The Rest. The North Vancouer Island Chefs Association (NVICA) during their Saturday FoodFest highlighted various dishes in the cookbook that features recipes from the market vendors. Market General Manager, Twila Skinner (left) noted how this unique collaboration sold 41 cookbooks raising $1,025 to support the urgent work of Diabetes Canada. With over 100 recipes provided by CVFM vendors and NVICA chefs, RIPE is available at The Mustard Lady, Blue Spruce Ice Cream and Laughing Oyster. All funds continue to be donated to Team Diabetes. The Cumberland Culture and Arts Society was founded in 2003 to create opportunities for community education and growth in the visual and performing arts. CCAS supports and puts on numerous events throughout the year, including the Woodstove Festival, Life Drawing sessions, and recently they hosted a Galactic Roller Disco event that was a great success. The cedar decking was a significant budget issue for the new society. Local carpenters will offer in- kind support for the labour and Green D Forest Products has been engaged to mill the lumber, thanks to the generosity of Peninsula Co-op. The McLoughlin Gardens are situated in the Brian and Sarah McLoughlin Regional Park on Tasman Road in Merville. The cottage and gardens host writers and artists-in-residence each summer.
