In front of an excited crowd, Marcelle Moose of MNP drew the winning ticket for the Comox Valley Hospice Society (CVHS) 4th Annual Ultimate fifty/50 raffle on Friday, Oct. 12 at the Kingfisher Resort and Spa.
The winning ticket holder, James Maxwell, was shocked to hear the news.
“We never win anything—we just donate,” he said, adding they had purchased their tickets at Canadian Tire.
James lives with his wife, Rosa, and two sons, Charlie (3) and Sammy (1), in Courtenay.
The Maxwells said they would use the money to buy a much needed safer new van for the family. And, in keeping with their generous spirit of community support, they will also be making a donation to the Comox Valley Hospice Society and Jeneece Place, a residence for kids needing medical care and their families in Victoria.
“It’s truly gratifying to see such generosity of spirit from people who understand the importance of making our community a great place to live and raise a family as well as a good place to die,” said Paula Horky, president of the Comox Valley Hospice Society. “While many people think of hospice as support for our elders, the number of children and teens experiencing the death of a loved one is growing. Comox Valley Hospice Society is working to secure funding to increase supports for youth who are anticipating or have experienced the death of a loved one.”
