Haley Tufts usually spends her time on her newspaper route delivering the Comox Valley Record.
On Saturday, she was collecting, for a change.
A couple of weeks ago, Haley dropped off a note to each of her Record customers, letting them know of her intention to help others this Christmas.
“Dear neighbours, my name is Haley Tufts, I am your newspaper girl. I had the great idea this year we should do a neighbourhood Christmas hamper. So on December 1, 2018, my family and I will be canvassing door to door between the hours of 10:00 till noon, for donations to the local food bank. For families that don’t have [enough] for the holidays.”
The note also included suggestions for items to donate.
On Monday morning, Haley, her brother Tyson, and their dad, Darin, took an entire truckload of donations to the Comox Valley Food Bank.
“I was hoping to get at least a truck full,” said the 14-year-old Vanier student. “I was kind of surprised at how much we got.
“I just wanted to help out families in any way that I could.“
Haley’s mother, Lisa, said this is typical of Haley, and Tyson as well.
“Every year they pick a charity to give back to for their birthday. This way they understand the concept of giving and receiving. With Haley, I’ve always said that she would make a good fundraiser. That would be a good career for her. She loves the challenge.”
“I do it to make other kids happy,” said Haley. “I live a life where I can have all these things. Some kids can’t have them. So it’s just about helping others.”
