It didn’t take long for the Comox Valley’s first baby of 2022 to arrive.

As confirmed by Island Health on Jan. 5, the first baby born at the North Island Hospital Comox Valley campus in 2022 arrived just 20 minutes into the new year.

Shayna Box and Jordan McCormick welcomed six-pound, six-ounce Jarod Tyler McCormick into their lives early Saturday morning - a little brother for six-year-old Shayla Monk and three-year-old Jasper McCormick.

Jarod was due on Jan. 4, so the new year’s birth was not a big surprise.

“Baby and mom are both very healthy,” said Shayna, who added her other two children were on the small side as well. “My first was very small - four pounds, nine ounces, and my second one was six pounds, 12 ounces. My mom said that I was about 10 pounds at birth, so I am feeling pretty lucky.”

Shayna and Jarod were released from hospital Sunday morning.

“I’m, feeling great; we are all adjusting pretty well,” she said. “Shayla is super excited. She is just loving being a big sister again. Jasper is having a bit of an adjustment but he is doing really well too.”

As for naming the baby, Shayna pointed to the family pattern.

“Dad’s name is Jordan, and then there’s Jasper, so we were trying to stick with J names. We both really like the name Jarod, and he came out looking like a Jarod, so we went with that.”

Shayna said they have a good support system in place, as she grew up in Black Creek and Jordan grew up in Cumberland.
