A Courtenay church is announcing its annual Blessing of the Pets service on Sunday, Oct. 6.
St. John the Divine Anglican Church will be holding the service, which celebrates the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, who was a lover of animals and the natural world.
St. Francis, the patron saint of animals, is celebrated each year by many parishes around the globe with a special blessing for pets. His deep respect for all living creatures has inspiring many communities to honour and care for their animal companions. The tradition of blessing pets on St. Francis's feast day has become a ritual that acknowledges the bond between humans and animals.
The service will be led by Rev. Alastair Hunting. He will offer prayers and blessings for each pet. The event is open to the public, and community members are encouraged to bring their pets, family and friends.
Attendees can bring their pets on leash or in carriers, and the service will be followed by light refreshments and a chance for pet owners to socialize.
St. John the Divine Anglican Church is located in Courtenay at 579-5th Street.
