Courtenay Museum hosts Vancouver Island historian for ‘pictorial talk’

Vancouver Island author and historian Catherine Marie Gilbert will present an in-person pictorial talk based on her new book, A Journey Back to Nature: A History of Strathcona Provincial Park, 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 5 at the Courtenay and District Museum.

Enjoy never before seen archival photos and a fascinating account of the century-long effort to define, access, preserve, develop, and exploit the uniquely beautiful Strathcona area of rugged wilderness in the centre of Vancouver Island.

The book has been described by B.C. author and historian Barry Gough as “A bold testament to a world nearly lost, here is an evocation of nature’s fragility in the face of industrial and commercial onslaught. A moving, passionate and authoritative panorama.”

Copies of A Journey Back to Nature will be available for purchase ($26.95 plus tax, Heritage House Publishing) and signing after the talk.

Catherine Gilbert is an accomplished author, lecturer, and historic interpreter. She was awarded her master’s degree in public history from UVic in 2018, after completing her thesis based on the environmental history of Strathcona Provincial Park.

Admission to the evening is $5 per Historical Society member; $6 for non-members. Advance tickets are strongly recommended. Public health measures and reduced seating capacity are in place. FMI or to purchase tickets over the phone call 250-334-0686 ext. 2.
