With roadwork on Cumberland Road now wrapping up, the village is celebrating the completion of a three-year, multi-million dollar upgrade project on two of its main traffic corridors.
The Cumberland Village Upgrades project began with its first phase on six blocks of Dunsmuir Avenue in 2016, with new water and sewer pipes installed along with new paving, curbs, crosswalks and more.
In 2017, the work moved to Cumberland Road, widening the roadway to add bike lanes, sidewalks, medians at key locations and improved crossings near Bevan Road.
This year, April and May saw the final stages of work – with the completion of the work on Cumberland Road, following preliminary work to the section last year.
“We are so glad to be helping the village, our residents and visitors moving forward with these improvements – they really are a big step forward to both our operations and the look of these two key corridors,” said Mayor Leslie Baird. “We thank everyone for their patience throughout this process – it certainly represents a long-term gain for our community.”
The project was paid for by the Comox Valley Regional District’s Host Community agreement, Building Canada’s Small Community Fund, grants from Bike BC and ICBC Road Improvement Program, a consortium of businesses on Cumberland Road and the residents of Cumberland.
The Village Upgrades project is part of a long-term village commitment to improve the infrastructure of Cumberland and will provide exciting and much-needed improvements to the community.
