Birth, death and taxes. All guaranteed. Birth can be a joyous occasion, taxes, not so much. With death, we can’t change the destination, but we can surely influence the journey. And, the more you make time to talk about what matters most to you the more likely you will be able to have your voice heard.
The public is invited to attend any of the three remaining sessions in the “Death Matters” series hosted by Comox United Church from 7-9 pm.
• Thursday, Nov. 1 - “The Journey of Dying and Grieving: Exploring a variety of spiritual and practical paths to help us find our way” presented by Rev. Keltie van Binsbergen and Rev. Ted Hicks. The evening will focus on how we deal with death, our own or that a loved one, and how we deal with the accompanying grief. It will explore different spiritual paths and practices, from the Christian faith and others, that can help us on the journey. This is the only spiritual/religious focused event.
• Wednesday, Nov. 7 - “Community Support” is offered by staff from the Comox Valley Hospice Society and the Island Health Palliative Program. Attendees will journey with a patient, her loved ones and caregivers from the time of diagnosis of a major change in her health status to the time of her death as well as grief and bereavement support for her loved ones. You will leave understanding more about hospice palliative care available in the Comox Valley for people, young or old, who are living with a life-limiting illness, their caregivers and their loved ones who are grieving. You will also learn how talking early to your family about end of life care wishes as well as making your wishes known to help ensure the things that are important to you are respected when, and if, you are not able to answer for yourself.
