With summer just around the corner, it’s that time of year again when the Denman Conservancy Association and generous Denman Islanders invite us to marvel at stunning homes and meticulously-kept gardens.

This highly anticipated self-guided tour gives visitors a chance to view unique homes and gardens tucked away at the end of winding driveways, behind gates and hedges. The biannual Home & Garden Tour, taking place on Saturday and Sunday, June 15-16 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. is the DCA’s largest fundraising event.

Twelve diverse properties offer something for everyone, against the backdrop of Denman’s pastoral and ocean views. Features this year include: the garden of Canadian gardening icon Des Kennedy; stunning West Coast-style homes with panoramic views; homes built with innovative use of recycled and reclaimed materials; sun and shade gardens; mature gardens and new gardens; organic working farms and a vineyard; fascinating art collections and workshops.

The Community Hall at 1196 Northwest Rd. will serve as a central hub, where visitors can get information, purchase or collect pre-purchased tickets, enjoy a morning coffee or locally made lunch.

Cyclists attending the tour will also be able to enter a free draw for prizes.

“This is a way to encourage and appreciate everyone who rides their bike,” says tour co-ordinator Katarina Meglic.“Given that the tour is all about raising money for conservation, we’re thrilled that we can reward green transportation. This year, with our increasing awareness of the climate crisis, it seems even more relevant.”

Organizers started offering a prize for cyclists six years ago, and the trend continues to grow.

“In past years we’ve had over 100 people cycling the tour. It makes a visual impact on our roads. We’re hoping for more this year,” said Meglic. “And we hear from people who cycle that they loved the experience of being outdoors and seeing the Island in a new way.”

The tour is a benefit for the Denman Conservancy Association, to help protect endangered ecosystems across the island.

Tour tickets are $20 per person, available at www.denmanconservancy.org and the following retail locations: Rusty Rooster in Cumberland, Home and Garden Gate and Art Knapp Plantland in Courtenay, and Blue Heron Books in Comox.
