Can you balance on one foot for 10 seconds?

Middle-aged and elderly people who cannot balance on one leg for 10 seconds are almost twice as likely to die within 10 years than those who can, research suggests.

Dr. Claudio Gil Araujo, of Clinimex Exercise and Sports Medicine in Brazil, authored the study, involving 1,702 participants aged 51-75. The study was conducted between February 2009 and December 2020.

How well a person can balance can offer an insight into their health. Previous research, for instance, indicates that an inability to balance on one leg is linked to a greater risk of stroke. People with poor balance have also been found to perform worse in tests of mental decline.

Test yourself. If you fail you might want to consider taking free tai chi classes available in the Valley. Current research indicates that studying tai chi improves balance and is also linked to improved memory and cognitive performance.
