The Comox Valley Ringette Association has secured the Merry McKentys for a family contra dance fundraiser on Friday, July 26 at the Merville Hall.

The Merry McKentys are a seven-piece family band consisting of five brothers, one sister, a dad, three fiddles, a guitar, a mandolin, a banjo and an accordion, with frequent appearances by other instruments and family members.

Not sure what contra dancing is? Don’t worry, no dancing skills are needed. Full instruction will be provided, and guaranteed to have even the wariest of dancers on the dance floor.

Ringette is a fast-paced ice sport introduced in 1963 in North Bay, Ont. It’s played with a straight, tapered stick used to pass, carry and shoot a rubber ring. The greatest difference between ringette and hockey is that obstruction and interference that routinely occurs in hockey is prohibited in ringette. Instead, players are required to use skill and speed in checking opponents, resulting in a fast-skating, highly-skilled passing game.

The challenge with ringette in the Comox Valley is that there are no other teams on the Island for the four local teams to play. So, fundraising is critical to helping players travel off-island for tournaments and skill development.

Come out Friday from 7-11 p.m. for a musical evening in support of a great sport.

There will be snacks, refreshments, cash bar, door prizes and a silent auction. Tickets are $10 if purchased through organizer arranarthur@shaw.ca, or $11 at Bop City Records in Courtenay.
