Join North Island College in welcoming Robert R. Brown, author of the acclaimed personal finance book Wealthing Like Rabbits, for a free public event at the Stan Hagen Theatre, Thursday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m.
The first 100 attendees will receive a free copy of Brown’s book, as well as an evening of sound – and occasionally hilarious – advice on student and personal finances.
Brown got the idea for the book while watching a Discovery Channel program about the explosion of the non-native rabbit population in Australia and its effects on local vegetation, remarking: “That’s how they should teach people about compound interest, by using compounding copulating rabbits as an example, instead of boring people to death with charts and graphs.”
His wife encouraged him to pursue the idea and Brown finished the book two years later.
Wealthing Like Rabbits has since been lauded for its off-kilter and humorous approach to finance, drawing on Forrest Gump, cigars, Spock and countless other life and pop culture examples to teach people about responsible money management. The book was included in a MoneySense list of ‘10 personal finance books you need to read now,’ and has also been featured in the Globe and Mail and Maclean’s Magazine.
The book has been singled out for its value to younger earners and savers, with one blogger declaring: “Every millennial needs to read this book – especially the chapter on opportunity cost.”
Gail Vaz-Oxlade, financial author and host of television’s Til Debt Do Us Part, Princess and Money Moron, described Wealthing Like Rabbits as “Smart, funny and totally relatable for young people who want to figure out money.”
The event is a unique learning opportunity, said Kathleen Kuhnert, NIC associate vice president, student services and registrar.
“This is sure to be a fun, informative evening for everyone, including students who may have questions on how best to use their money,” said Kuhnert. “We hope to see as many people as possible turn up.”
Following his presentation, Brown will lead a short Q&A session with audience members. The event is open to the general public but those interested in attending are encouraged to arrive at the Stan Hagen Theatre early to get a seat.
