Monday, Aug. 21, the Comox Valley Horticultural Society welcomes Dianne Maclean, to share her knowledge, as a Metis elder and storyteller, about the traditional uses for common plants and weeds that surround us, which have been used cross culturally for medicine, food and craft for centuries.

Dianne’s passion is for teaching, wildcrafting and reawakening our connection to the earth, each other and our Community.

Wildcrafting is learning how to identify and eat edible wilds. It’s a way to connect with the rest of nature, and develop observation skills, critical thinking and natural intelligence, all while developing survival skills — which could become important should our fossil-fuelled agricultural system break down.

Food is the essence of culture, from the collection, to the preparation, to the serving and then the eating of food; it is what makes us who we are. It binds us to our families, our community, our history, our identity, and our home.

Dianne believes food is medicine and our medicine is where we are. She works with many community agencies and believes we all have knowledge and gifts to share. Let’s begin a journey of rediscovery together at the Courtenay Filberg. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7:30. Dianne will have some of her hand-made products available for sale at the meeting.

Annual memberships are still available for $20 ( $30 family couple) but guests are welcomed for only $5. Further details at comoxvalleyhortsociety.ca
