The Human Cost of Gold

The Human Cost of Gold, an evening of film, discussion and photographs, will be held this Friday at 7 p.m. at the Stan Hagen Theatre.

What do you know about the gold you buy?

The Human Cost of Gold, an evening of film, discussion and photographs, will be held this Friday at 7 p.m. at the Stan Hagen Theatre.  The Amnesty International Comox Valley Action Circle presents the film, When Silence is Golden.

Also attending is Naomi Wolfe, who visited the Marlin Mine region of Guatemala in 2011 and participated with a Rights Action solidarity delegation to Guatemala in July 2012.

Her presentation, The Human Face of Mining in Central America, shares stories of people she met across Guatemala. She will speak and share photos of the impact that Canadian resource extraction companies are having on the people and their communities.

Naomi has been a faculty member in the English as a Second Language Department at North Island College since 1989,  as well as a leader and outspoken advocate for immigrant and Human Rights for two decades. She  lived in Guatemala for many years.

The evening also includes an Amnesty International photography exhibition and homemade sweets provided by Amnesty members. This presentation continues the Just Desserts series that is offered each fall when local Amnesty International members share concerns and information about Amnesty International’s Business and Human Rights Campaign.

Admission Friday is by donation. For details, contact Sheila at 250-335-2246 or Monika at 250-337-5671.
