Trail Bicycles in Courtenay has formed a team to participate in the Ride to Conquer Cancer, a two-day cycle from Vancouver to Seattle, 240 kilometres in total.

The team hopes to raise at least $22,000 for the B.C. Cancer Foundation. Each member needs to raise $2,500.

The group has already raised more than $10,000.

Team captain is shop owner Jeff Beeston, who lost his grandfather Reginald to bowel cancer.

Along with honoring his granddad, Beeston is riding to support his teammate Ian MacDonell, a Bowser resident who is battling multiple myeloma. Ian is undergoing chemotherapy but nevertheless plans to pedal with the group, which includes his daughter, Jen.

The other members are Lindsay Townsend, Mike Manara, Teresa Edgar and Jason Stevens.

The team is holding three fundraisers in May. The first is a silent auction Thursday at the Prime Chophouse. On May 17, they will sell hot dogs and host a spinning session at Trail Bicycles at 1999 Lake Trail Rd. May 29 features music by donation at the Grotto with singer Vanessa Marshak, who hits the stage at 7:30 p.m. Beforehand, the team will cruise on their bikes and wind up at the show.

The Ride to Conquer Cancer is June 14 and 15. This year is the sixth B.C. ride. To date, the event has raised more $50 million.

With one in three British Columbians diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, the ride unites communities for one common goal: a world free from cancer.
