On Monday Aug. 20, the Comox Valley Horticultural Society welcome Peter B. Janes, co-owner of the 40 acre Tree Eater Nursery on Denman Island, speaking to us about their “unusual edibles.”

Janes started working on this land in 2003 to develop a small education center, but now has expanded to growing a large assortment of perennial and annual vegetables and storage crops, maintaining a mixed orchard (of over 160 varieties of fruits/nuts/berries) and their duck and goose associates, managing an edibles nursery, on-site saw-milling and building farm infrastructure, herbal medicine and creating delicious seasonal farm-based foods.

His background in academia (a degree in anthropology and environmental studies), visual arts and technical outdoor education have been put to good use.

He is inspired by people who stay put and work to produce not only what they consume, but also what the community needs to thrive, and value doing-it-yourself, developing local responsibility and working hard towards idealistic ideas.

This presentation takes place at the Courtenay Filberg, doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Guests are $5, but an annual membership of $20 (family $30) includes discounts at many local garden retailers, members-only garden tours and workshops and much more. Details at www.comoxvallyhortsociety.ca.
