PREVAILING WINS TILLER Norm Flower guides the team into second place in the River Dragon Boat Festival in Campbell River.

The Comox Valley’s Prevailing Wins Dragonboat Team won the Silver Paddle at Campbell River’s second annual Race the River Dragon Boat Regatta on June 30.

Coming in second overall in the mixed men and women’s team division, the team narrowly missed a first-place finish, finishing 6/10ths of a second behind Comox Valley’s Dragonflies at 01:47.0 and ahead of the bronze-winning Namaxsala — the Kwakwaka’wakw dragonboat team from Fort Rupert and Alert Bay.

Promoting excellence in dragonboat racing — especially among youth in the Comox Valley — is the primary mission of Prevailing Wins. Partnering with community corporations this year, the team has sponsored and mentored a new dragon boat youth team, the Dragon Riders, in this centuries-old sport.

Prevailing Wins is grateful to captain Leon Van Noorden, coaches Bill Jay and Peter Williams, tiller Norm Flower, drummer Karen Petersen, and lead strokes Michelle Murphy and Kathy Tae.
