A Nanaimo resident was a winner at a woodcarving championship earlier this spring.

Members of Vancouver Island Woodcarvers Club won awards at the Ward World Wildfowl Carving Championship in April. At the 48th annual competition, which took place at Ocean City, Md. April 27-29, Bill Beese took first and second place, as well as an honourable mention for his three shorebirds in the open decoy and smoothie divisions, according to a press release.

Lynn Branson, a four-time world champion in interpretive wood sculpture, and Greg Pedersen both placed third in interpretive wood sculpture and decorative life-size wildfowl categories respectively.

The club meets on the third Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to noon at the activity centre at Bowen Park. Carvers of all interests and skill levels are invited.
