The cleanup at St. Andrew’s Cemetery in preparation of Remembrance Day will take place Saturday, Nov. 3 from 9 a.m to noon.

On Remembrance Day members of the Armed Forces (soldiers, sailors and airmen) are commemorated.

The original name for this day is Armistice Day, which marks the date and time when armies stopped fighting the First World War - on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. in 1918 (the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month). Some 100,000 Canadian soldiers died in the First and Second World Wars. At least two dozen of them are buried at St. Andrew’s Cemetery (at the back of St. Andrew’s Church) along Dingwall Road in Courtenay.

The Comox Valley community, especially the families and descendants of veterans, is invited out to St. Andrew’s Cemetery on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 9 a.m. to noon, to honour our veterans by helping clean up their final resting place in time for Remembrance Day.

A short candlelight tribute ceremony will be held at the cemetery before the cleanup to remember our fallen soldiers. Dress for the weather conditions and bring leaf-gathering equipment if you have it. Refreshments will be provided for volunteers during the cleanup.
