Andrew Janusson Quartet jazzing things up in Comox

The Georgia Straight Jazz Society (GSJS) kicks off itssecond show of the 2023-2024 season this Thursday, Sept. 21, with the Andrew Janusson Quartet.

The performance is at The Little Red Church in Comox.

The group features Janusson on guitar, Dr. Tony Genge on piano, Brock Meades on bass and Kelby MacNayr on drums. Janusson is an award winning, up-and-coming jazz guitarist who excels at straight ahead, swinging jazz.

His quartet contains Meades, originally from Edmonton, who recently graduated from UVic with a master of music in performance in classical music on double bass.

MacNayr performs in Canada and abroad with leading musicians from New York, Seattle, Portland, Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto and Europe.

He is also a faculty member of the renowned Jazz Port Townsend Festival under director John Clayton, and is on staff at the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival.

Genge is one of Canada’s leading jazz organists and jazz pianists. He is also a respected music educator and a well-known and much-recorded composer of classical music.

The Andrew Janusson Quartet will play a selection of ballads, swing tunes and Tin Pan Alley standards for your listening pleasure. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. with doors opening at 7 p.m.

Admission is $20 ($15 for GSJS Members) and $5 for students.
