A significant new painting “Lions of the Sea,” featuring life-sized stellar and California sea lions, has been installed at the Comox Valley Airport’s arrival lounge.

“When my Sea Lion painting with its strong composition and renaissance light emerged on my canvas, I kept it aside with the full intent of having it on public

display,” said Shannon Ford, the artist who created the piece.

Hearing this, a friend of Ford’s reached out to airport staff to make them aware of the opportunity.

Ford is considered by many to be one of Canada’s top contemporary equine and animal artists. Her move to Denman Island last fall inspired her to turn her distinctive manner and style to the wildlife of the West Coast.

“Shannon’s work captures the majesty of the wildlife that inhabits our region, fitting in well with the sense of place we try to establish here in the terminal,” said Comox Valley Airport CEO Fred Bigelow. “When someone steps off a plane from Calgary, Edmonton or even further abroad, we want them to have no doubt they are entering our amazing part of the world.”
