The Comox Valley Art Gallery will host a public opening and reception on Thursday, Nov. 16, at 6:30 p.m. to celebrate new exhibitions of work created by local artist Lindsay Celeste.
Everyone is welcome to this free event, where Celeste will talk about her personal process behind the exhibit and be available to answer questions.
Celeste’s two projects, “Inheritance” and “Magic For Realists”, will run at CVAG until Jan. 13. Through work in fibre, video, installation and sustained performance, Celeste explores the complex legacy of intergenerational relationships. Celeste will also be at CVAG on Friday evening, Nov. 17, in conjunction with the Moonlight and Magic community celebration in downtown Courtenay. CVAG will be open until 8 p.m., and Celeste will be on-site to present her deck of tarot cards and magic capes associated with her exhibition.
The exhibition and events are part of CVAG’s convergent program “Upholding One Another.” The program will include exhibitions, installations, video programs, and community conversations and art-making.
“This convergent program explores the topics of misogyny, gender-based and racialized violence, and resiliency,” said CVAG co-curator Denise Lawson. “Community collaborations will stitch together creative actions, cultural teachings and knowledge-sharing to instigate social change.”
In addition to Celeste’s work, the convergent program will include “Held Space,” a sanctuary for learning from one another through art and community conversations.
Contributors include Gwen Monnet, Elder Dr. Evelyn Voyageur, Diana McKenzie, the Comox Valley Transition Society, the Indigenous Women’s Sharing Society, Lil’ Red Dress Project and Noojim Owin Kwe.
“Consent,” a video program created by artists in the community, will also be presented 24-7 on the CVAG plaza media gallery.
CVAG will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 16, until 6 p.m., when doors will be open for the opening event. CVAG will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17, the day of Moonlight and Magic.
After that regular hours will be Wednesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Admission is free, with donations gratefully accepted. Find out more at www.comoxvalleyartgallery.com
