Portrait of a Lady on Fire, starring Adele Haenel and Noémie Merlant, will be screened at Landmark Cinemas in Courtenay Sunday, March 1 and again Wednesday, March 4.

Just a few tickets remain for multi-award winning film, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, at the Comox Valley Art Gallery’s 2020 winter film series.

Winner of both the Queer Palm and Best Screenplay Awards at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, it garnered a 98 per cent approval rating from Rotten Tomatoes.

Hired to paint a portrait ahead of a prospective marriage, an artist in 18th-century Britany finds herself falling for the reclusive would-be bride. The film engages the emotions and the intellect in tandem as our heroines discuss the purpose of art and life while their love builds from a spark to a blaze. Director Céline Sciamma uses this stirring love story to apprehend what it means to truly see - and to truly be seen.

The film screens Sunday, Mar. 1, and Wednesday, Mar. 4, 5 p.m., at Landmark Cinemas, 2665 Cliffe Ave. in Courtenay.

Tickets may be available at the door, but seating is only assured if you purchase your ticket in advance. You can purchase tickets in person at the Comox Valley Art Gallery from Tuesday to Saturday between 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., or by calling (250) 338-6211 ext. 1

The CVAG film series is a presentation of films selected from the Toronto International Film Festival. The series runs twice a year, from January to April and from September to December. Proceeds support programming at the Comox Valley Art Gallery.

Individual tickets cost $15, or $14 for CVAG members.

The next film in the 2020 series will be Arab Blues, which will screen on Sunday, Mar. 15, and Wednesday, Mar. 18.
