R.M. McDonald of the Comox Valley has written her first children’s book, “The Milk Monster.” The inspiration for the book comes from the real life relationship between her dad and her son, Max. When McDonald’s dad came to live with her family, he was known to drink a four litre jug of milk to himself within two days.
The book explores the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren, Max’s adventures with his grandpa and the special bond they had. They often went for walks together, watched movies and explored the wonders of the stars. The book brings humour to their adventures and a bit of intrigue as Max hears noises from the kitchen the first night his grandpa arrives. Max wonders if there could be a monster in the kitchen.
McDonald’s inspiration for writing “The Milk Monster” came from her father moving into their home and strange noises coming from the kitchen at night. After her father’s passing, she felt the need to write something tangible for her son to remember his grandpa by.
McDonald says her biggest obstacle to writing is finding quiet time. Her home is full with three kids, two cats and a dog.
McDonald doesn’t just write children’s stories, she has also worked on six adult fiction books which take their inspiration from music. She is a lover of fantasy novels with her favourite authors being Tolkien and in the romance fantasy crossover genre, Rebecca Yarrows and Sarah J. Maas.
