The Georgia Straight Big Band has a few openings for experienced musicians.

“We are looking for experienced trumpet, trombone and sax players to dust off your instrument and join our big band,” said Rob Peterson, who has been the band’s manager since its formation, 16 years ago.

“Our band is conducted and instructed by the elite skills and musicianship of Greg Bush, professor of jazz studies at Vancouver Island University.”

The Georgia Strait Big Band has a 300-song repertoire and rehearses every Monday evening at the lower Elks, with performances throughout the year, culminating every July 1 with the annual Canada Day Tea Dance at the Native Sons Hall.

“We are an amateur community-based band, as opposed to an audition band, but a decent degree of music reading skill is a base requirement,” said Peterson. “Challenge yourself to re-ignite that passion for music and join our band and its superb leadership to elevate your skill level while having a great time.”
