Danny Z. at coffeehouse

The monthly Cumberland Coffeehouse this Sunday will be hosted by Danny Zanbilowicz.

The monthly Cumberland Coffeehouse this Sunday will be hosted by Danny Zanbilowicz.

Zanbilowicz has been sharpening his musical chops over the last year sitting in on keyboard at various local jams, especially Sundays at the Cumberland Hotel, and has picked up cues from some of the terrific musical talents he has played with.

For the coffeehouse, he will switch to guitar, and play mostly original tunes. To his and the audience’s great delight, he will be joined by Viv and Steve Ruskin, two-thirds of the band Five Play.

Zanbilowicz and the Ruskins have been having a wonderful time playing some of Zanbilowicz’s tunes, and a couple of choice covers. With Viv’s beautiful harmonies and plucky mandolin, and Steve’s tasteful, melodic keyboards and harmonies, the songs have never sounded better.

Zanbilowicz performs a wide range of grooves and sentiments, from hard-driving blues, to Latin, to good old-fashioned country and folk, with thoughtful lyrics and unexpected humour.

Cumberland United Church is an especially fine venue for this kind of acoustic music, with excellent sound, and an always-appeciative, attentive audience.

The first hour of the evening is an open stage for other performers, regardless of experience, and one truly never knows who is going to show up. Doors open at 6:30 p.m; come early to be assured of stage time.

The coffeehouse, held at the Cumberland United Church (corner of First at Penrith in Cumberland), starts Sunday at 7 p.m. and the featured performers begin around 8:30. There is a cover charge of $4.
