Let your spirits take wing and your smiles soar while listening to the uplifting sounds of the three Just in Time Vocal Jazz Choirs on April 16 and 17 at the Comox Pentecostal Church.

The Unplugged, Jazzy Jems, and Vocal Minority ensembles are all presenting songs fluttering about a theme: Fly!

You’ll hear swing hits like Flip, Flop, and Fly, Straighten Up and Fly Right, Come Fly With Me, Blue Skies and Orange-Coloured Sky, rousing gospel numbers such as Movin’ Up, Lift Up Your Voice, and Over My Head, contemporary chart toppers including Drift Away and Alison Krauss’ I’ll Fly Away and lovely a capella songs like Eva Cassidy’s Songbird, Rajaton’s Butterfly, the Beatles’ Blackbird and the Real Group’s Bumblebee.

The word “fly” has so many fun meanings; some of the songs are meant to raise hearts through the roof while others are audio portraits of air on the wings of birds or insects.

The Fly! show is a culmination of three months of dedicated work on the part of the 75 Just in Time singers, amazing accompanist Sean Mooney and musical director Wendy Nixon Stothert.  For the concerts, they are joined by brilliant bassist, John Hyde and dynamic drummer, Jacob Gregory.

One of the most poignant arrangements will feature a special guest, cellist Helena Jung. She’ll be playing Sarah McLachlan’s Angel with Vocal Minority.

This spring, the Just in Time singers have benefited from some inspiring workshops with gospel guru Brian Tate and a musical sharing and clinic with Janet Warren’s Higher Ground, a woman’s ensemble from North Vancouver.

Tickets for the concert are $15 (children 12 and under are free) and can be purchased at the Laughing Oyster Bookshop in Courtenay and Blue Heron Books in Comox. Showtimes are April 16 at 7:30 p.m. and April 17 at 3 p.m., both days at the Comox Pentecostal Church at Anderton and Guthrie.
