Fatigue is one of the most common concerns that people experience, affecting our physical and mental well-being. From a naturopathic perspective, addressing fatigue involves a holistic approach that looks at addressing the root cause of the issue and supporting natural energy production.

Lab Diagnosis and Underlying Causes

When addressing fatigue, it’s crucial to first identify its root cause. A naturopathic doctor will often start with comprehensive lab testing. This may include checking for anemia, thyroid function, adrenal health, and metabolic imbalances. Hormonal imbalances, like low cortisol or thyroid hormones, are common contributors to fatigue, as well as infections, chronic inflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction.

Additionally, testing for nutrient deficiencies is essential. Deficiencies in B vitamins (especially B12), magnesium, iron, and vitamin D can all lead to low energy levels. These labs can help guide a targeted, individualized treatment plan.

Correcting Nutrient Deficiencies

Fatigue is often linked to deficiencies in key vitamins and minerals that play a role in energy production. B vitamins are vital for converting food into energy, and low levels can lead to persistent tiredness. Iron is another critical nutrient; low levels may result in anemia, a condition directly linked to fatigue.

Food and supplements that address one’s particular need, such as magnesium, B-complex vitamins, and iron (if low), can help restore levels. Nutrient injections can provide a more immediate boost compared to oral supplements, especially in those with severe deficiencies or impaired digestion.

Mitochondrial Support

Mitochondria are the powerhouses of your cells, responsible for producing cellular energy in the form of ATP. Supporting mitochondrial health is often key to combating fatigue. This requires certain nutrients and if I suspect someone needs mitochondrial support, then supplements or nutrient injections can help provide those nutrients. Mitochondria are prone to oxidative damage, so a diet rich in antioxidants can help protect them from oxidative stress (colourful fruits and vegetables are richest in antioxidants!).

Cold Plunges for Energy

Cold exposure, like cold plunges, can also be an effective strategy for fatigue. Cold plunges stimulate the nervous system, increasing alertness and circulation. They can boost metabolism and trigger the release of norepinephrine, resulting in increased energy levels and mental clarity. Regular cold exposure also builds resilience and improves the body's capacity to handle stress, reducing overall feelings of fatigue. Cold plunging isn’t for everyone and make sure you stay in only as long as comfortable for you.
