The Sid Williams Theatre Society’s film series continues with a screening of Out of Sight this Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Released in 1998, Out of Sight is a crime-comedy film directed by Steven Soderbergh and based on Elmore Leonard's novel of the same name.

This was the first collaboration between Soderbergh and star George Clooney, who would subsequently work on Ocean's Eleven, Twelve, and Thirteen together. Out of Sight shares a similar style and wit with the Oceans films.

The film, showing this Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Sid Williams Theatre, also stars Jennifer Lopez, Ving Rhames, Don Cheadle, Dennis Farina, Catherine Keener, Steve Zahn and Albert Brooks.

Out of Sight received two Oscar nominations for Adapted Screenplay and Editing. That same year it was the National Society of Film Critics choice for best film, screenplay, and director. The film eventually led to a spinoff television series, Karen Sisco, starring Carla Gugino.

Film critic Roger Ebert gave the film three-and-a-half out of four stars and praised George Clooney's performance: "Clooney has never been better. A lot of actors who are handsome when young need to put on some miles before the full flavour emerges ... Here Clooney at last looks like a big screen star; the good-looking leading man from television is over with."

In her review for the New York Times, Janet Maslin wrote, "Ms. Lopez has her best movie role thus far, and she brings it both seductiveness and grit; if it was hard to imagine a hard-working, pistol-packing bombshell on the page, it couldn't be easier here."

Admission is by donation or pay what you can.

Generously sponsored by Nicole M. Deters of Investors Group, a series of film screenings are fundraising events for the Sid Williams Theatre Society.

The Sid was a state-of-the-art movie house when it opened 78 years ago, then known as the Bickle Theatre. Over the years, theatre technology has seen many incredible changes, but the speed of change and cost required to keep up with those changes is an ongoing challenge.

Funds raised are earmarked for technical upgrades, primarily a new projector.
