The Strathcona Symphony Orchestra (SSO) launches its 20 Anniversary season by playing an array of pieces chosen by the orchestra’s dedicated audience members.
Encore!, the title of the SSO’s December concerts, will be on Dec. 7 at 7 p.m, and Dec. 8, at 2 p.m., at Courtenay’s Florence Filberg Centre.
The show covers two decades of music performed by the orchestra including works from classical composers such as Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, and Chopin, to movies and television programs, including James Bond, Harry Potter, and Downton Abbey. Christmas favorites and a sing a long will also be on the roster. There is something for everyone to enjoy.
December’s concert promises to be a journey through cherished memories and musical gems. The selections truly reflect the orchestra’s love for music and its community.
“In addition to saying a musical ‘thank you’ to our audiences for choosing the program, I am also thrilled to share the stage with one of the orchestra’s founders, Blaine Waldbauer,” said Helena Jung, the SSO’s Music Director.
“Blaine will lead the orchestra once again as concertmaster, and his initial contribution of growing the membership and music repertoire fits perfectly with the SSO’s 20 year celebration of offering the best of music to our beloved Comox Valley and Campbell River communities,” said Jung.
The SSO has provided opportunities for local musicians to perform in front of a live audience, try their hand at small ensemble work, audition for solo opportunities, and work with other fellow musicians to create a special forum for amateur players to enjoy the process of presenting a polished performance.
Starting with a handful of enthusiastic musicians, the SSO has grown to encompass over 70 members with ages ranging from 13 years old and up. All members share the passion of presenting music at its best to the Comox Valley, Campbell River, and beyond.
