Take a look at the Golden Years

Be prepared to laugh and cry at life in the Cruise Ship (Titanic?) of long-term care.

Support Our Seniors Comox Valley, a local non-profit organization which advocates for seniors, is presenting a musical review on life in the so-called Golden Years.

It happens June 4 from 2-4 p.m. at the Florence Filberg Centre in Courtenay.

Todd Butler has been busy composing satirical songs that typify the plight of Golden Agers who are finding that life in residential care is often not the idyllic experience it is sometimes depicted as.

The event will also include skits and some very special performances that will make you laugh and cry.

Following the entertainment, a panel will be available to answer questions about seniors' care.

Other non-profit groups will be at the event with displays and information about their services.

"After years of writing letters to papers, VIHA, the hospital, and politicians about improving the quality of care to seniors, we decided that we needed to inject some humour into this very serious subject. Perhaps we can laugh, sing and dance our way to some solutions while doing some consciousness raising on the issues," says director Ann Zanbilowicz.

The office of the provincial ombudsperson is about to release a second report on the lack of quality care for the elderly in B.C. SOS, like other organizations around the province, is trying to address some of these concerns.
