Get ready for a great fun evening at this week’s Thursday Night Jazz at the Elks Club.

The 11-piece Cure-All Dance Band performs, complete with deadpan jokes, under the direction of Brent Hart, focusing on original 1920s and early ‘30s arrangements from Tin Pan Alley.

The band dresses authentically in period attire and features instruments from the era, recreating the feel of the hotels, roadhouses and steamships of the 1920s. This is Cure All’s second host appearance at the Georgia Straight Jazz Society’s performances during the 2010-2011 Season.

Jazz club regulars will recognize the players from other combos with which they share their talents: Paul Charter, percussion; Al West, banjo; Donna Griffiths, piano; Gordon James, tuba; Rick Howell, trombone; Laura Stevens, trumpet; Jim Mitchell, trumpet; Ann Bayles, violin; Jim Grinder, soprano and tenor sax; Mike Schwartz, soprano and alto sax; Brent Hart, clarinet, alto sax and music director.

This week’s performance includes the addition of Kate Morrison on vocals. Fans may recognize her from her many appearances in Light Fantastic musicals. Her soaring voice and wonderful phrasing are a real addition to the band.

The lounge will throb to the syncopated rhythms of authentic numbers from original charts. Among the tunes the band will present are Happy Feet, Paper Moon, ‘Tain’t no Sin, Red Hot Mama, and I Wanna Be Loved By You, as well as a host of other vintage numbers.

The Band will play two exclusive sets, commencing at 7:30. Plan on arriving early to get a good seat — full houses have become the Thursday norm. Please note, there will be no jam following these two sets.

The Georgia Straight Jazz Society promotes a live jazz concert every Thursday from 7:30 to 10:30, offering you the chance to hear great live music with a $5 suggested cover charge.
