Positive change is afoot as we move into the Year of the Hare, so now is the time to harness your intentions by connecting with others through a voice and movement workshop with VocalEase instructor Joanna Finch.

Kali Loves Aphrodite – Aphrodite Loves Kali is a fun and transformative interactive workshop Jan. 21 and 22 for women and men who are interested in exploring and releasing positive energy through voice and movement.

Registration is limited to 16 participants so all individuals have time to express their creative selves in a supportive group.

Friday night begins at 6:30 with a guided meditation, sharing of intention, vocal toning, freeing the authentic voice and the Kali dance, then we let loose with primal beats to dance till 9:30. Saturday begins at 9:30 a.m. with a silent walk into the woods to create a “voicestra” with nature. Back at the Abbey Arts centre, we commence with a yoga practice, writing, improvisational voice songs, dance and dream/intention sharing.

The premise of this workshop is to celebrate the powerful creative forces within ourselves that get blocked by fear, and to reveal our inner beauty so that we let our lights shine. We invite the spirit of Kali, Hindu goddess of destruction and creation, and Aphrodite, Greek goddess of love and passion, to help us dance and sing our fears and joys, deepening our compassion towards ourselves and others.

During the 11 hours in the workshop, everyone will have the chance to fully express the creator, the lover and the destroyer. Dance your desires, release your joy and pain, and find self-love while gathering insights into the mystery and magic of improvised song.

VocalEase instructor Finch, with her 20 years’ experience in performance arts, enables free dialogue, spoken and sung, through word games and interactive voice exercises. Kindness and support create a healing bond that weaves throughout VocalEase teaching.

Bring a pen, a journal, a small blanket or shawl, an object (talisman, stone, amulet or the like) that is meaningful to you, and wear loose, comfortable clothing as well as clothes suitable for being outside. No singing experience or knowledge of improvisational arts are necessary.

To register, call 250-336-2474 or e-mail info@joannafinch.com. Registration closes as soon as the class is full.

Cost of the workshop is $60 to $90, sliding scale. Community Way money is accepted at 50 per cent.
