Fungi enthusiasts won't want to miss an opportunity to learn about the wonderful world of mushrooms at the Strathcona Wilderness Institute's annual mycology workshop this month.
Taking place at Paradise Meadows from Sept. 21 and 22, the workshop will feature some of Vancouver Island’s most respected mycologists, Andy MacKinnon, Thom O'Dell Erin Feldman and Bryce Kendrick. These experts all have extensive experience in teaching mushroom ecology and morphology, as well as guiding field forays.
On Saturday, there will be in-class slide presentations and identification sessions, combined with forays out into the meadows, in both the morning and afternoon. Lunch will feature a wild mushroom soup.
The next day, Loys Maingon, the institute's director, will lead a hike through the fungus-rich forested slopes trail to Divers Lake, which lies in the valley below and to the west of Paradise Meadows.
The cost to register is $70 for adults and $25 for students with a limit of 15 participants.
