Are you interested in contributing to the monitoring of air quality in the Village of Cumberland and the Comox Valley? Cumberland is currently seeking three volunteers to install PurpleAir monitors on their property. The PurpleAir monitors require a USB power source and access to wireless internet. This initiative follows a similar project undertaken by the City of Courtenay, where monitors were installed across the municipality.
A $5,000 grant was awarded to Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) from the BC Lung Foundation to purchase PurpleAir monitors that, once installed, will provide real-time air quality data into a global air quality map, helping residents understand localized air quality levels. This is aligned with sub-action 5A of the Regional Airshed Protection Strategy to expand air quality monitoring networks for education and to conduct ongoing data analysis.
To support the installation of the monitors, the PurpleAir website provides detailed resources, and helpful tutorials are available on YouTube.
The Village is seeking one volunteer household in each of the areas shown on the map. PurpleAir monitors will be distributed to volunteers on a first come, first serve basis.
If you live in or around any one of these areas in Cumberland and are interested in participating in this initiative, please send an email to info@cumberland.ca. The email should include your address and a short expression of interest.
