On Oct. 11, for FIre Prevention Week, Courtenay and Comox fire departments are teaming up with Domino’s Pizza to reward residents who have working smoke alarms in their homes with free pizza.
When Comox and Courtenay residents in single residential homes, duplexes and townhomes phone Domino’s Pizza between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., they might have firefighters deliver their pizza.
With the customer’s permission, the firefighters will arrive by fire truck and check the household smoke alarms to make sure they are working. If your smoke alarms are working, they will get their pizza for free. Customers are chosen at random and dependent on resources available.
If your smoke alarm requires new batters, the firefighters will place them. For those without working smoke alarms, firefighters may return to install a battery-powered smoke alarm for free.
Fire Prevention Week runs from Oct. 6 to 12 and this year’s theme is “Smoke alarms: make them work for you!” The campaign reinforces the importance of smoke alarms and what is needed to install, test and maintain them properly.
Having working smoke alarms reduces the risk of dying in a home fire by more than half. Roughly three out of five fire deaths occur in homes with either no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
The Domino’s Pizza’s participating are in Courtenay on Ryan Road (350-334-3333) and in the Comox Mall (778-431-0222).
