One of the Comox Valley's favourite summer events returns to Downtown Courtenay July 20, when city streets welcome the 52nd Annual Market Day festivities.
Hosted by the Downtown Courtenay Business Improvement Association (DCBIA), the event transforms the centre of downtown Courtenay into a vibrant pedestrian-only zone, with local vendors, family-friendly activities, and live entertainment.
“We're excited to showcase the vibrancy of our downtown core,” says Greg Chadwick, Executive Director of the Courtenay BIA.
“Market Day is a longstanding tradition that brings together thousands of people each year, creating a space where the community can come together and celebrate.”
From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. portions of 5th street, England Avenue and Duncan Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic, for a safe and accessible environment for all.
The streets will be lined with vendors displaying anything from artisanal goods to Market Day specials to information about local community organizations, and of course, food trucks will be serving up delicious local fare. “The goal of the DCBIA is to bring beauty and vibrancy to the area, driving tourism and promoting local businesses,” Chadwick explains.
One of the highlights of this year's event is the introduction of two new entertainment zones. “We've added more family-friendly activities and a dedicated kid zone, sponsored by Piper's Bounce,” Chadwick says.
“On a hot summer day, attendees can also cool off in our water fight zone, sponsored by Glacier Water Hauling.”
In addition, Market Day will continue to offer its beloved attractions, including live performances on two stages. Located on Duncan Avenue near the Comox Valley Art Gallery and at the intersection of England Avenue and 5th street, these stages will host a variety of local musicians and performers throughout the day.
“And at 10 a.m. on the England stage, we'll be making an exciting announcement about a new addition for the downtown core,” Chadwick reveals.
Accessibility is a key focus for the Courtenay BIA. The event is designed to be fully accessible, ensuring that everyone, regardless of mobility, can enjoy the festivities. “The streets are barricaded off and free from automobiles, making it safe for pedestrians and those using mobile aids,” Chadwick says.
Chadwick believes the event’s success over the years lies in the strong support from the Comox Valley community. “The community is the driving force behind the success of our downtown businesses. They are the essence of the Comox Valley, and we want to create a fun, engaging event that reflects that spirit.
“We're looking forward to another fantastic year!”
