More and more people are cycling for recreation, exercise and as a more affordable way to commute to work or school. If it's been a while since you've been on your bike, you might feel unsure about the rules of the road, the best safety practices, how to properly equip your bike, or have other cycling-related questions.
That's where the StreetWise Cycling Online Course comes in. The course is provided by HUB Cycling to provide essential cycling education virtually. With a focus on safety and road rules, this free program offers adults a comprehensive learning platform to help them ride with confidence.
Built on the Moodle platform, the self-guided course can be accessed anytime from any device with an internet connection. Complete the course between now and November 30th by registering at bikehub.ca/swco and you will be entered to win a $500 gift card to a bike shop of your choosing!
Adapting and evolving
The course has evolved over the years, becoming a valuable resource for those looking to switch to cycling as a practical and eco-friendly mode of transportation. Whether you're a hands-on learner who prefers focusing on bike preparation or someone who excels with theoretical knowledge, like road safety and navigation, StreetWise Cycling Online has something for everyone.
“Some people learn with more tactile and kinetic courses, but some people prefer more theory-based learning," notes HUB Cycling’s StreetWise Manager, Alexis Thibeault. "This course offers a way for folks who prefer to learn through visuals and text to get the safe cycling information they need.”
Since its creation, the StreetWise Cycling course has continued to grow, incorporating feedback from users to make the course even more effective. Updates include an e-bikes module,, added material on cycling in more challenging and rural environments, and more interactive elements.
Cycling as an economic solution
As the cost of living continues to rise, more people are cycling as a cost-effective and healthy school or work commute. “The cost of driving can add up to over $7000/year. Cycling can save you so much money as well as improve your physical and mental health” Thibeault says.
Resources like StreetWise Cycling Online equips participants with the skills and knowledge they need to make that transition smoothly and safely. Want to cycle your kids to school as well?
