For many of us, appliances aren’t a frequent purchase. Because of that, available features and options can change a lot between purchases.

Whether you’re planning an upgrade, a full-on renovation or you’re in the market for an emergency replacement, appliances are a significant budget item – you want to get it right.

And that’s where local knowledge and expertise can help.

Dustin and Lisa Parker have served the Comox Valley community for four years from Parker’s Appliances and More, selling all major home appliances from the Courtenay store. However, both Dustin and Lisa bring a wealth of previous knowledge and experience from 20-plus years each in the local industry.

“The community support has just been fantastic – people were really glad that we were still here in the Valley and we couldn’t be more thankful,” Dustin says, crediting their five-member team equally committed to ensuring a positive customer experience.

Beyond offering a good selection of appliances, outdoor kitchen essentials and mattresses, “we definitely provide a level of service you’re not going to find anywhere else, and certainly not at the big box stores,” Dustin says. And with a local business built on community reputation, “we’re here for the customers at the time of purchase, and years down the road as well.”

With that in mind, here are a few things to keep in mind when you begin appliance shopping:

  1. Measure your spaces – This includes the height, width and depth of the space you’re working with. Some appliances – refrigerators, for example – can come in options such as counter depth for smaller spaces, and stoves have multiple widths. “‘Standard’ isn’t really a very good word when it comes to appliances as there really aren’t ‘standard’ measurements,” Dustin says.
  2. Consider your lifestyle – What do you need the appliance to do? Is it laundry for a family of five, for example or for a single? Do you entertain a lot or feed growing teenagers? Size and storage configuration will figure into the fridge model you choose.
  3. Practical matters – Gas? Induction? Electric? Convection or steam? Black, white or stainless? You’ll have many considerations as you narrow your appliance choices. In addition to your measurements, do bring along any photos or swatches you might have, and of course, your budget. “We work with the customer throughout the process to get something that fits their needs and their budget,” Dustin notes.
  4. Your timeline – Sometimes an appliance needs to be replaced in a hurry – hello, leaking washing machine! – other times, it’s part of a larger renovation. While it can be tempting to leave the appliance purchases to the end of the project, the current supply chain challenges mean that appliance shopping should happen sooner to ensure your appliances are ready when you are, Dustin notes. “We do our best to make sure we have appliances in stock for those emergencies, but it’s always best to not leave it ‘til the last minute, if possible.”
