If you haven’t been appliance shopping for awhile, and you find yourself in the market for a new laundry pair or kitchen essential, you’ll likely have a few new options to consider.

In addition to enhanced energy efficiency and water-saving features, you’ll definitely see more technology in everything from your washer and dryer to your refrigerator and stove, says Dustin Parker, who with Lisa Parker serves the Comox Valley at Parker’s Appliances and More.

The two have seen many changes over their more than 20 years in the appliance industry, but today’s innovations often echo those reflected in our connected homes.

Here’s a look at what that means:

If a new refrigerator is on your wishlist, you’ll be choosing from more than whether you want an ice maker and a bottom-mount freezer. Many of today’s fridges have an LCD touch-screen that serves as a information hub for the family – a place to record those appointments, soccer schedules and special dates, for example, Dustin says.

Other possible features include LG’s InstaView window or even a camera inside the refrigerator that lets you see inside – no more calling home from the grocery store to see if you need milk! Or look for a door-in-door design that lets you access frequently accessed items like beverages without fully opening the refrigerator and letting out all the cold air.

Innovative ideas for cooking include ranges with a remote option that lets you preheat the oven from your smartphone – meaning it can be warmed up and waiting as soon as you get home. Some models are tapping into the air fryer technology that’s taken home cooking by storm, Dustin notes. The added benefit? No need for another countertop appliance. To further elevate your cooking, there’s even an oven with sous vide capability.

Time for laundry? You’ll no longer need to run up and down the stairs to check if the washing is done – simply wait for the notification on your smartphone. And for those wanting additional cleaning options, consider steam: LG’s allergy care cycle “uses water and heat to create a super-disinfecting steam that sanitizes clothing while still being gentle.”

Whether you’re excited by the innovations on offer, or prefer a familiar favourite with the benefit of today’s energy-efficiency, the knowledgeable team at Parkers Appliances in Courtney will walk you through your options. And beyond offering a good selection of appliances, you’ll also find outdoor kitchen essentials and mattresses.
