Car Free Sunday has been cancelled in Comox, organizing group Imagine Comox Valley announced today.
"It is with heavy hearts that we have to announce that Imagine Comox Valley will not be organizing a Car Free Sunday event in Comox this year," ICV founder Andrew Gower said in a news release.
"We wish to be clear that Comox town council and staff were supportive of Car Free Sunday, as were many members of the community. However, some of the downtown business owners were very opposed and quite confrontational over the idea," Gower continued.
"With the limited time remaining before Sept. 25, we simply do not have the time to win over the business owners and organize a fun, inclusive event."
He urged supporters of Car Free Sunday in Comox to write to town council and the Comox Business In Action group with their thoughts about the cancellation.
Car-free events will proceed Sept. 25 in Courtenay and Cumberland, in which sections of those communities will be blocked off to cars for several hours.
"We are confident that Car Free Sunday will be so well-received this year that all three communities will want to host it next year and we look forward to working with all interested parties at that time," Gower stated.
"This event is for everyone and anyone of any age, background and occupation, and offers us all a chance to experience some of our common infrastructure creatively," he added. "Car Free Sunday is a chance to go out, have some fun, imagine what is possible, and be a part of your community!"
