Despite handing out warnings and fines on Halloween, Comox council is looking to do more following complaints of fireworks within the town.

At the Nov.17 council meeting, Coun. Ken Grant said fireworks are becoming more of an issue, and he believes a fireworks shop on Comox Road on the K’ómoks First Nation is the problem.

“I know we don’t have any jurisdiction on what goes on there, but I was wondering if we could send them a letter just letting them know that it’s a big issue for our community and if there’s anything they can do to help mitigate that?”

He added while the shop is open year-round, Halloween was a lot worse than usual this year. While he noted he could not tie the issue directly to the store, “it’s more than coincidence that the shop opened and then the problem started.”

Jordan Wall, the town’s chief administrative officer told council on Halloween, the town had two bylaw officers patrolling and were “fairly successful” in handing out warnings and fines - six in total.

While Mayor Russ Arnott suggested he could talk with KFN Chief Nicole Rempel, Grant suggested a motion to send a letter regarding the sale of fireworks on KFN territory, which was passed unanimously.
