The Comox Recreation Commission is seeking proposals for youth outreach programs encompassing sport, culture or the arts.

Individuals or groups can request up to $7,500 for programs that will run six weeks or longer and start in January next year, pending funding.

The goal of the funding is to inspire teens and engage them in activities that will have a positive impact on their lives.

Interested parties should submit a proposal outlining the activities provided, how they are delivered, community benefits, accessibility, sustainability and community support.

Templates for funding are available from plewis121@hotmail.com.

The deadline to submit proposals is July 15.

The Comox Recreation Commission (CRC) is an advisory body to the Town of Comox on sports and recreational activities. Along with its primary objective of supporting youth activity in the Comox Valley, the CRC runs occasional programs and administers funding.

"Kids don't always have opportunities to be exposed to the wonderful variety of resources and activities that exist in our community," said a CRC representative. "The more things they can try out, the better. Once kids find something they have a passion for, they are so much better off."

Dozens of studies conducted over the past two decades consistently indicate that kids who participate in after-school activities tend to have better academic performance, better relationships with their peers and a greater sense of belonging to their communities.

The CRC hopes this funding will help create similar opportunities for local youths.
