With summer around the corner, it may soon be possible to enjoy a beverage on the patio at Land & Sea Brewing Co.
At Wednesday’s council meeting, Comox council agreed to take the next step for a possible outdoor space at the brewery by gathering the views of residents on a maximum 38-person outdoor patio in front of 2040 Guthrie Road.
Owner Jason Walker told council he has been working on the patio idea for more than a year and said it would help as many small businesses - including his - have struggled lately due to the economic shutdown of COVID-19.
Coun. Maureen Swift inquired about the parking situation at the brewery, and if neighbours have raised further concerns about the situation.
“We haven’t really had many issues with our neighbours within the last year - it’s really calmed down,” replied Walker.
Coun. Ken Grant reminded council when the business was initially approved by council, it stirred some controversy and negative feedback from neighbours.
“We got a lot of comments about parking. I think this is a wise direction (to receive comments from residents). Let’s see what (neighbours) have to say when we send it out. I think you’re going to hear a bit from the neighbourhood - I think it’s a good way to find out what they think.”
Noting the patio would be good for the community, Coun. Pat McKenna added the brewery is community-driven and he sees the patio as an advantage for residents in Comox.
The motion to gather the views from residents was approved unanimously. Residents are encouraged to provide written comments to the Town; in addition, a mail-out will be sent to owners and tenants within 75m of the property to provide comments.
