Dorothea Gordon’s goal is to create compassion while speaking to women about their sexuality and life experience.

The Fanny Bay author spent a year creating her latest book - Daring Decisions - which is set to be published by the end of June, in order to coincide with Pride Month.

The book explores the themes of mind versus heart, particularly with topics covering homosexuality, bisexuality, heterosexuality and polyamorous relationships.

“It’s erotic but it’s not distasteful - but it’s up to the discretion of the reader. I want it to be an escape, to educate and to entertain,” explained Gordon. “I had met a number of people who were bisexual and they all said it had been very difficult as they got married to fit into society, into their families; that they have to fulfill certain roles.”

Daring Decisions, Gordon’s second book, is a work of fiction, but the former educator wanted to ensure Vancouver Island was heavily featured in the novel. The story mostly takes place in Victoria where she spent most of her teaching career, but Tofino and a rescue helicopter from CFB Comox are weaved into the book.

The novel features Lotti Seidel, a German psychology student who meets the love of her life in the Canadian military doctor, Joseph LeBoutillier. After discovering a 20-year secret of LeBoutillier’s, Seidel divorces him in a fit of rage. Years later, the two reconnect, and LeBoutillier’s husband Michel is willing to share. After LeBoutillier nearly dies in an accident, Seidel discovers how much she still loves him and how she must choose between a relationship that may break or heal her heart and the conventional life she thought she wanted.

She notes that older women are expected to ignore their sexual desires and fantasies, and the main character learns to embrace love relationships in their different forms.

Similar to her first book, Gordon is taking the self-publishing route and hopes to launch the book across the Island.

“The more I can educate people, the more I fulfill what have come into this incarnation for,” she said.

Daring Decisions can be pre-ordered by emailing books@dlgordon.ca and will be available for purchase through local bookstores and Amazon/Kindle.
