The Comox Valley Lifelong Learning Centre is launching its fourth year of StoryWalk from June 6 to Sept. 30.
Families can find this year’s nine new StoryWalks mounted at the edges of playgrounds, rivers, parks and pathways in Comox, Cumberland and Courtenay.
StoryWalks are self-guided story tours created to encourage family and friends to read aloud, share, and discuss texts and illustrations together.
Whether families have visited a Storywalk site before or are new to the experience it is an opportunity to enjoy and explore literacy in outdoor settings.
Since 2020, the Comox Valley Lifelong Learning Centre has worked with the Town of Comox, the City of Courtenay and the Village of Cumberland to provide Storywalks in outdoor settings for summer enjoyment.
The program was first started in 2007 by Anne Ferguson and Rachel Senechal and is a registered service mark of the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.
Each year, the Learning Centre staff and community partners select titles to reflect the social and cultural climate of our community.
Summer 2024 will involve titles from contributors as varied as local artist George Littlechild and renowned Italian children’s writer Gianni Rodari.
“Picture books are more than just fun. They have the ability to inspire children to be active meaning makers” said Allison Sanders, Lifelong Learning Centre literacy outreach coordinator. “Sharing the experience of reading as a family can help young people develop a love of books”.
