The City of Courtenay is getting its feet wet in preparation for a new flood mapping study by approving overland flood routes and establishing interim changes to the floodplain mapping for the Courtenay, Puntledge and Tsolum rivers.During their Monday council meeting, councillors also agreed to amend the land use provision in flood plains to account for the efforts of rising river levels by increasing the flood levels for construction by 0.8 meters for the area within the tidal influence. Kevin Lagan, director of operational services noted in a report to council that the last flood mapping plans the City of Courtenay has is from 1991, and over the last 20 years, new factors such as increased rainfall during storms, rain on snow precipitation and runoff and rising ocean levels due to global warming need to be considered. The Old Island Highway, Puntledge Road and Tsolum Road were approved to be designated as overland flood routes in the storm drainage system. Lagan adds this would set the infrastructure plans for these roads to remain essentially at the elevations they are today.photos@comoxvalleyrecord.com
